Utah Company Announces BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop) Conference
Provo, UT (PRWEB) May 19, 2009
A company from Utah thinks it knows how to change the face of the technology conference industry. Rapid Intake Conferences has announced a new brand of technology conferences called BYOL, which stands for Bring Your Own Laptop (http://www.byol.com ). The first BYOL conference, called BYOL eLearning 2009, will be held October 20-22 in Salt Lake City and is for e-Learning professionals (http://elearning.byol.com ).
“The idea behind this new line of conferences is simple,” says Isaac Hess, Director of Conferences and Events for Rapid Intake. “Every session in these conferences will have a hands-on experience. And when I say every session, I mean every session. These will be the only conferences of their kind in the entire industry. No one else is doing this, and we’re really excited.”
Rapid Intake Conferences, a division of Rapid Intake Inc., first came up with the idea of an all hands-on conference while hosting a separate annual eLearning conference, eLearning DevCon (http://www.elearndevcon.com). For the past three years eLearning DevCon has offered a number of hands-on sessions. These sessions grew so popular that Hess and his colleagues began considering an entire BYOL conference.
At last year’s eLearning DevCon conference they finally decided to put it to the test. During the keynote banquet event they gave each attendee a small voting device so that they could get instant results. They then pitched the idea of an all hands-on conference and asked them to rate their interest.
Hess laughs about what happened next: “We didn’t even get to the voting! Halfway through our explanation of what the conference would be like, everyone started clapping and cheering. It was right then that we knew we had an idea people would be interested in.”
The first conference, BYOL eLearning 2009, will be held in October, with two more planned in 2010. After the eLearning conference Rapid Intake Conferences will turn its attention to a BYOL Flash/Flex conference, and then later a conference for those interested in Web 2.0.
Asked why he is so confident about BYOL’s success, Hess is sanguine: “It’s simple, really. Most conferences are pretty expensive, and with the current economic climate, business are looking for conferences that will deliver: conferences where people will actually learn something. Business aren’t going to spend money on just any conference. They’re going to look for a good investment. BYOL conferences are the good investment they’ve been looking for.”
